The Books in Bloom Literary Festival offers up a new bouquet of authors each year, many with international reputations and millions of books in print. The festival, now in its 9th year, will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 12 Noon to 5 pm, at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs. Attendees will hear five featured author talks, along with a dozen more readings by a splendidly diverse gathering of area and regional authors with books ranging from the American Civil War, medicinal plants and biographies to social justice, Arkansas eateries, history, mysteries and more. And it all takes place over the course of a single afternoon. Even more incredible in this era of exclusive, ticketed author programs, this is a free event!
This year the festival includes fantasy icon Terry Brooks, whose Shannara series has been thrilling readers for decades; Elizabeth Berg, a favorite with book clubs for her moving story lines and eye for the telling details of modern life and relationships; and Michael Shelden, a biographer whose newest work, Young Titan, profiles the early years of Winston Churchill. Also on board this year is Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist and author of a bestselling series of mysteries featuring her alter-ego, Temperance Brennan. She and daughter Kerry, an author in her own right, together collaborate on scripts for the TV series Bones, based on Kathy’s novels.
